On Tuesday 2nd November, Olena and Jesse bought a flat at auction. A pretty poxy flat in Penzance. But truly in it we saw our dream home. The advertised price of £35,000 appeared to give us an opportunity we did not think at all possible: the security of a home which neither of us has ever really had.

This was our first ever auction. We did not anticipate this going for such a high price as all the research we did suggested it would be much closer to the advertised price, maximum maybe £50,000. We are a couple (39 and 38 years old respectively) who is just trying, like many, to get onto the property ladder to ensure neither of us ever ends up homeless again. Fortunately, we have been working in an international school overseas which has allowed us to save a basic amount. This seemed like a great opportunity to do so at a cost that was accessible. The property is something we envision living in for the entirety of our lives and is really our dream home. This is ultimately why we were willing to commit to purchasing the property no matter the cost. I am from Devon and my wife is from Crimea in occupied Ukraine. We visited Penzance and the surrounding area this past summer and fell in love with the area.

Unfortunately, the way the auction went seemed to ensure the price went as high as possible for us. I just wanted the property guaranteed to us. So on each and every opportunity I immediately outbid the only other bidder! It was an incredibly nerve-wracking auction as we saw the price go further and further out of our reach. But I simply refused to let go. If we had done so, we would have forever been left with a "what if". So we ended up at £94,000. Considering the rest of the auctions that day, this was so unusually expensive. An entire mill which could easily be converted into at least 3 apartments in Ermington sold for £110,000!?

Regardless, we are happy with the price. We just need to secure additional finance to complete the purchase. £60,000. We are determined to meet the deadline as per the agreement. We have until the end of November.
